Medical Assistants are important members of health care teams who assist physicians with patients. Our dynamic class covers both the clinical and administrative functions of the medical office as well as an externship. Administrative duties include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes. Clinical duties include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications.

Graduates meet the qualifying standards for the Medical Assistant Certifying Examination (NCCT). This course is Pell Grant  and WIOA eligible. 

Program objectives

  • Become employed as a medical assistant in the health care industry.
  • Acquire the skills and knowledge needed to pass the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Medical Assistant certifying exam
  • Learn to perform both clinical and clerical functions of a medical assistant
  • Train students to enter the workforce as critical thinkers, effective communicators who are responsible, ethical, and respectful employees

Program requirements for graduation

Classroom & Externship:

  • Attendance of 95%.
  • Complete 320 externship hours.
  • Complete all assignments.
  • Maintain at least an 80% on skills, assignments, assessments, and participation.
  • Take and pass the NCCT exam.

Physical:

  • Visual and hearing acuity
  • Ability to kneel, bend and lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to walk and stand throughout the day

Professional:

  • Communicate effectively, including active listening
  • Function as an effective team member
  • Prioritize and sequence
  • Utilize critical thinking
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism and integrity
  • Ability to handle stress

Prerequisites (required before enrolling):

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Health insurance
  • Updated inoculations
  • CPR/BLS training
  • Medical Terminology Course
  • Typing Verification (35+ wpm)

steps to enroll

and/or

  • Attend WIOA info session. See AJCC Calendar.
  • Set up doctor appointment to complete Health Verification form and get inoculations if needed. 
  • Return all paperwork to Room C5.
  • Attend Orientation to Health Careers (no charge).
  • Enroll in the program after all admission requirements are completed.
  • Complete paperwork (pick up and return to room C5).
  • Enroll in the program after all admission requirements are completed.
    1. If paying in full, enroll with secretary in Room C5 and sign enrollment agreement.
    2. If payment plan is desired, call 925-685-7340, ext. 6730, to make appointment to enroll, set up plan, make first payment, and sign enrollment agreement.
